SODAC is implementing a child-centred water access project in Traditional Authority Mwabulambia, Chitipa District, aimed at improving access to clean and safe drinking water for 3,500 vulnerable children aged 2 to 5 years attending Early Childhood Care and Development (ECD) centres. The project is addressing critical water challenges that affect young children’s health, learning, nutrition, and safety in rural communities.
With generous funding from the GO Campaign, two boreholes have been drilled at two ECD centres (Sankhwa and Nakasengere), ensuring reliable access to clean water within safe learning environments. As shown in the accompanying photo, children are now able to drink safe water at their respective centres.
Access to safe water has reduced waterborne diseases, improved hygiene and nutrition through backyard gardening, strengthened early learning outcomes, and lowered risks of child abuse, early marriage, and teenage pregnancy. This project demonstrates how clean water lays a strong foundation for children in rural Malawi to grow, learn, and thrive.
